Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI) |
|
|
 |
|
 |
|
| |
ICSI is a highly sophisticated
technique for injecting one
single sperm into an egg using
microscopic and
micromanipulation instruments so
it bypasses all the natural
barriers that the sperm has to
encounter. It is used for
couples who have previously
failed IVF or when the man has
severe infertility problems.
Ovarian stimulation , cycle
monitoring and egg collection
for ICSI is the same as for
conventional IVF. The sperm is
prepared on the day of egg
collection. The embryologist
selects a single viable sperm
and injects it directly into a
healthy and mature egg. The
injected eggs are examined next
day for evidence of
fertilization. The best embryos
( maximum of 3 ) are transferred
into the uterus 3 - 5 days later
, any suitable remaining embryos
are frozen as in conventional
IVF.. |
