PGD - Preimplantation Genetic Diagnosis |

A very new and high technology
for detection of abnormal embryo
is now available through Bangkok
Fertility in Bangkok, Thailand,
called PGD (Preimplantation
Genetic Diagnosis).
Following ovarian stimulation,
egg collection and
fertilization, embryos are
cultured for another 2 days
which they usually consist of
6-8 cells. Each of these cells
has complete genetic information
and also each cell has the
potential to continue growth to
establish pregnancy. Therefore,
one or two cells can be removed
from an 8-cells embryo by using
an embryo biopsy procedure and
the embryo will continue to
develop normally. The biopsied
cells will be analyzed by using
a technique called FISH
(Fluorescent in situ
Hybridization) or PCR
(Polymerase Chain Reaction). The
FISH technique can tell us
whether an embryo cell has a
complete pair of the specific
chromosome which are gender
chromosome (X or Y) and the
other chromosomes such as
chromosome no.13, 16, 18, 21 and
22. The doctor will discuss with
the couple about this PGD is
required for the couple or not.
Most people may concern to check
the specific chromosome problems
such as Down’s syndrome which is
caused by triple pieces of
chromosome no. 21. FISH analysis
can give us the results within
one day and only the normal
embryo detected will be
transferred back into the
uterus.
PGD is recommended for the
couples whose wife has advanced
maternal age. Women at this
stage have a high risk of having
a child with Down’s syndrome.
The other incidences that are
suitable to do PGD are the
couple who are carriers of
genetic disease, who has
recurrent abortion and couples
who carry X-linked diseases.
Haemophilia and Muscular
dystrophy are examples of
X-linked diseases.
It’s most likely that genetic
testing of embryos will be
routinely used to improve IVF
success rates and more over to
prevent transmission of genetic
diseases. To eliminate the
abnormal embryos and transfer
the genetically normal embryos
will offer a higher percentage
of implantation and reduced
miscarriage rate. |
